Invite the congregation to participate in the story. Give children a large cardboard star to wave and say that each time the storyteller says, “God whispered a secret to me.” They should whisper to someone around them “Jesus is coming!”
It was a night just like this one a long, long time ago. I remember because God whispered a secret to me. It made me feel all excited when I heard it- sort of a wiggly feeling in my stomach. I couldn’t stay still- maybe you even feel that way right now. It is the way you feel when something exciting is about to happen.
I am a star and I live high, high above the earth in the night sky. God created me before time began and I’ve been up here shining ever since then. But I remember that special night a long time ago- because God whispered a secret to me.
One of the great things about being a star is that I can watch the things that go on far below me on earth. And on that night- long, long ago, I was really paying attention. I was watching a town – a little town called Bethlehem. I was watching that place because God whispered a secret to me.
In Bethlehem there were a lot of people moving around. Entire families were on the road traveling together. At first I thought they were all going to Bethlehem because they knew the secret too, but it turns out that they were on their way there to be counted. It seems to me like a lot of fuss over numbers – but a lot of things you humans do seem silly to me. Still, I was watching.
There sure were a lot of people on the roads. I almost couldn’t find the two I was looking for in the crowd. I thought they would be in the biggest house in town, but they weren’t there. Then I looked in the finest inn, but they weren’t there. I searched in the smaller homes and in all of the places I could think of but they weren’t there. I was really looking because God whispered a secret to me.
At last I found the. Joseph and Mary were in the town but not in a nice place at all. They were in a little barn made out of a cave in the hill. It was back behind the inn. I couldn’t understand what they were doing in such a place. There were staying in the same place where the animals were kept. I didn’t think it was right- because I knew what was going on... I knew because God whispered a secret to me.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. So I glowed and I glowed as brightly as I could. I even moved across the night sky to get a better look. Was that really Mary and Joseph? I moved close and I glowed brighter. I looked and I glowed until I could see that Mary was holding in her arms a baby.
A Baby! I shined down as brightly as I could. A baby! There he was. I could see the beautiful bald, round top of his head as Mary bent to kiss him. I knew that this was a very special baby. I knew because God whispered a secret to me.
As I watched the town far below me, I noticed that there were shepherds heading toward the barn. They were practically running. Every now and then one of them would glance up at me. I’d wave- but I don’t think they noticed. When they arrived at the place where Mary and Joseph and the baby were they crowed into the room and knelt down. I knew what they were doing – because God whispered a secret to me.
Just then music began to play all around me. My friends, the angels, were coming out to play. They were singing loudly. Now you might not know this, but stars can sing and there is nothing we love more than a good sing-along. Soon all my friends were singing together, “Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth Peace and Goodwill to All.”
Glory to God! Glory to God because all these years later- you know and celebrate the secret of Christmas. Jesus the savior was born.
End with singing together “Go Tell It On The Mountain” as the kids wave their stars.
